When installing shocks on '86-'15 XL models, it may be necessary to modify or space the chain/belt guard to ensure sufficient clearance. A shock slightly longer than stock may slightly alter the rake angle and provide quicker steering. A shock slightly shorter than stock may slightly alter the rake angle and provide slightly slower steering. Heavy Duty applications recommended for motorcycles used at or near maximum manufacturer load more than 50% of the time. Before purchasing or installing shocks of a different length than OEM, verify that wheel travel can be modified without causing clearance issues, such as swingarm/axle contact with the exhaust or chain/belt guard or tire contact.
